The canine archetype runs long and deep in the conciousness of mankind. Beginning in primitive times, the relationship between canine and man started through the exchange of skills in hunting and protection, for shelter and companionship.
Subsequently the imagery of canines showed up in the godforms and myths of many cultures, thereby establishing the archetype’s place in man’s psyche. The theory is postulated that when dealing with the underworld (real and psychic), it is the
archetypical canine that is tapped into for instinctual hunting, putting up our guard, and as a guide to the underworld.
